Easy ways to create a festive decor

Whether hosting a baby shower or a birthday party, those throwing a party in their own home should spend time on the decor to create a festive atmosphere. However, preparing your abode doesn't have to be too complicated.

For a cost-effective and beautiful tablescape, event planner David Stark recommends wrapping empty bottles with metallic tape and filling them with fresh flora.

"You won't need many [flowers] because the bottle openings are small," he told InStyle, adding that tea candles can create a warm and inviting glow.

Take advantage of space to add flair wherever possible. Stark suggests covering the refrigerator door in brightly colored post-it notes to create a bold pattern or fun design.

Party favors can be incorporated into the decor as well.

"I like to fill glass jars with a variety of candies and set them out in a table in my foyer along with metal scoops and tiny paper bags," Stark told the publication. "It's a nice way for people to take a little piece of the celebration home."

"If you place the focus on guests interacting, the party can be just as meaningful," reports the Creston News Advertiser. Experts recommend letting guests write messages in a blank guestbook for the mom-to-be.

In the past, Kate Hudson has made headlines for her high-profile romances since divorcing from The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson in 2006, including her relationship with Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. However, it appears as if Hudson is ready to settle down. People magazine reports that the blonde actress and beau Matthew Bellamy are expecting a child together.

Hudson and Bellamy have been together just under a year. This won't be the first time Hudson will be sending out birth announcements. In 2004, she gave birth to son Ryder, whom she had with Robinson.

"They couldn't be more excited," an insider told the news source. "Kate is really happy. She was always excited to have kids again at some point."

Hudson has opened up in the past about how having Ryder affected her.

"You realize after you have had children that you'll never love anything more than your child," she told the magazine in 2007.

Hudson isn't the only star to announce that she's expecting with a man she has yet to marry. Earlier this week, French actress Marion Cotillard confirmed that she and actor-director Guillaume Canet are anticipating the arrival of their first child. While they aren't wed, the couple has been together since 2007. 

Create a wedding scrapbook

With snow piling up across the country, many people may find themselves stuck inside looking for ways to entertain themselves. Instead of zoning out in front of the television set, why not sort through your memory boxes and make a wedding scrapbook?

This is a great activity to do with your partner or your children – or as a solo-project for a bit of creative alone-time. All you need is a scrapbook (or a blank notebook or photo album), crafting supplies (construction paper, markers, scissors and stickers), and some mementos from your big day.

Arrange the scrapbook in whichever manner you please, though many people prefer to do it chronologically – from engagement to the honeymoon. Devote each page to a different topic, such as your gown and your weddings favors, and decorate it with appropriate items, like a photograph of you in your wedding dress or personalized water bottle labels from the reception.

Make sure to include captions – you may know the significance of the blue cocktail napkin, but somebody flipping through the scrapbook when you're finished may not!
